Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 through October 15. This year, Coalition4Justice (C4J) would like to focus on our Hispanic children and their families. The Hispanic population is one of the largest populations in the United States today and Hispanic children in North America represent a significant number of the US child population, comprising over twenty-six percent of the total number of children in the country, at least 1 in 4 children nationwide. This population is also disproportionately affected by increasing barriers to economic advancement and poverty with Hispanic children comprising about thirty-nine percent of children living in families with low income in the country - families with income below 200 percent of the official poverty line.
Although the Hispanic population has made important gains in some key areas of wellness and health - especially in teenage births, health insurance coverage, education attainment and youth incarceration,, there is still a high level of inequality in all of these sectors. This calls for the need to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in education and poverty in order to improve economic conditions for Hispanic parents and their children as well as foster economic growth by creating a well-qualified workforce for the nation.
Additionally, the shift in the US immigration policy and mounting mass deportation separating immigrant families, Hispanic children growing up in immigrant families, the status of their parents and/or family member/s have a big impact on their overall wellbeing and education achievement. The rise of anti-immigrant rhetoric, the public's engagement with ICE, and the messages children from Hispanic immigrant families receive from their neighborhood or school are compounding the health and wellness issues of these young people.
C4J calls for our policy makers and our education systems to make the right decisions to support and protect Hispanic children so that they may thrive and develop to be healthy, productive, and contributing adults. Join C4J in amplifying the voices of ethnic and immigrant communities, challenge the damaging stereotypes and myths and shine light on the many contributions of immigrants of color to our nation's development and history.
