A Crisis of Trust: Community Safety and Government Accountability
The Erosion of Community Trust and Safety
A fundamental responsibility of any government is to build community trust and ensure the safety of its people and children. Unfortunately, the current US federal administration is failing in this duty. Instead of protecting communities, the Trump administration has been accused of traumatizing individuals and families, causing the deaths of unarmed citizens, and sowing chaos across the nation.
Minnesota: A Case Study in Community Collective Action
Minnesota stands out as a clear example of how community involvement can challenge injustice. When concerned citizens and allies come together to document and expose ICE overreach—including fatal incidents—the official narrative propagated by the administration starts to unravel. The dedication of community members in bearing witness to injustice plays a crucial role in holding authorities accountable.
The Importance of Citizen Documentation
Citizen documentation of ICE and Border Patrol operations is essential. In Minneapolis, two US citizens were killed by ICE and US Border Patrol within two weeks, both incidents following a similar pattern. On January 7, 2026, Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother and US citizen, was shot three times and killed during an ICE operation. Despite claims by Trump administration officials that she struck an agent with her car and that her killing was “defensive,” independent video footage from a community witness contradicted these statements.
Just two weeks later, on January 24, 2026, another 37-year-old US citizen, Alex Pretti—a nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center—was also shot and killed during an ICE operation. Again, officials described the shooting as “self-defense,” but this assertion was disproven by multiple angles of public video evidence. Contrary to the administration narrative, Pretti did not pose any threat to Ice agents. The video footage analysis revealed that Pretti was unarmed, complying with commands, yet was pepper-sprayed, pinned to the ground, and ultimately shot and killed – a flawed and fatal decision by ICE and Border Patrol agents.
Accountability and the Need for Change
Despite the apparent demotion and reassignment of Greg Bevino, the former public face of ICE in Minneapolis, to California—and his removal from media access—this action does not signify true accountability on the part of the Trump administration. The ongoing deployment of masked ICE personnel in cities must end. The federal government should cease operations that threaten community safety under the guise of enforcement.
A Call to Action: Abolish ICE
The United States is a nation founded on the principles of liberty, justice, freedom and laws. Rogue ICE and Border Patrol actions, which mainly target Latinx and Black communities, can detain people without due process. Today, no one is safe – not Immigrants, not refugees, not even US Citizens. Stories of ICE and Border Patrol terrorism abound throughout the country. Masked federal agents are forcibly snatching and detaining people who have contributed to our communities for decades. It is time for the people to demand an end to ICE and Border Patrol operations that endanger communities and children. We all have a responsibility for ending ICE’s violent, lethal attack, lawless reign of terror. We urge citizens to contact their City Council Members, County Commissioners, Senators, and House Representatives to insist that the administration stop its harmful policies and prevent further harm to all - Immigrants, refugees, US Citizens.
